They thought witches were in the same group as bats. This is why seeing a bat in flight or hearing its cries was considered bad luck. • Horses were believed to repel witches. This is where the superstition of the lucky horseshoe comes from. If a horseshoe was placed over a door, the witch would not enter.• However, the horseshoe had to be made of iron and it had to come out by natural means. It must be placed at a certain angle and hammered in with iron nails. If it was face up, luck would not spread. • The expression “bless you” actually comes from a superstition. People believed that when a person sneezed, it was a door for the devil to possess their body. “Bless you” prevents this from happening.• The mirror was thought to reflect a person's soul.
